Kuiburi National Park is among the best places in Thailand for seeing herds of elephants that roam free. On this trip you watch them in their natural habitat rather than in captivity.
You are collected from your hotel or villa in the afternoon and driven south to the park, arriving at the visitor centre at around 15:00. There you move into an open 4WD with a local ranger, with no more than five people per vehicle, and spend until roughly 17:30 driving through dry-evergreen forest and the park's grazing grounds, looking out for elephants, gaur and birdlife. Kui Buri is an open national park, not a zoo, and its roughly 320 elephants are completely wild. They are seen on about 95% of afternoon trips, but a sighting can never be guaranteed; some herds come close while others stay grazing in the distance. Gaur and birds such as the Crested Fireback and Indian Roller add to what you may see. Transfers, park entry, the ranger guide and the 4WD are included.
