Renting a Scooter

The insurance gap that catches most visitors

A scooter is the cheapest and most enjoyable way to explore Hua Hin. It is also how holidays most often go badly wrong — and the reason is usually paperwork rather than skill.

Read this before you rent. Most travel insurance excludes motorbike accidents unless you hold a licence valid for that motorbike — in practice a motorcycle entitlement plus an International Driving Permit covering motorcycles. Without it you can be personally liable for a hospital bill running into six figures. Check your policy wording, not the marketing page.

What you need

  • A motorcycle licence from home, plus an International Driving Permit that covers motorcycles. Get the IDP before you travel — it cannot be issued in Thailand.
  • A helmet, worn and fastened. It is the law, it is enforced, and it is the difference between a graze and a life-changing injury. Ask for one that fits.
  • Clarity on what the rental insurance covers — very often the bike, and nothing else.

Renting sensibly

  • Never leave your passport as a deposit. Cash or a photocopy is normal; the passport itself leaves you with no leverage in a dispute.
  • Film a slow walk around the bike before you ride off, including every existing scratch. Damage disputes on return are the most common complaint.
  • Check brakes, tyres and lights before you accept it.
  • Wear real shoes. Flip-flops and a scooter produce a very specific injury that Thai hospitals see every day.

If you are not already a confident rider, Hua Hin is not the place to learn. Grab and the local taxis are cheap, and we can put a car and driver at your door instead.
